Adding tooltips to your text can help give additional context without interrupting the flow of information. Tooltips can be used for a variety of different situations including showing definitions of terms, providing additional information, showing citations for factual information, and guiding users to other resources.
Applying tooltips to text
These steps can also be repeated if you need to edit your tooltip later.
1. Highlight the text you'd like to add your tooltip to
2. Select the Insert/edit Tooltip icon () from the text formatting toolbar to open the tooltip editor:
3. Add an optional heading for your tooltip by typing in the Tooltip heading field
4. Write the main text in the Tooltip text field. You can use the formatting toolbar to add bold and italic formatting or embed a link into the tooltip text.
5. Select Insert
The text will become coloured and underlined to signify that it contains a tooltip.
Removing the tooltip
1. Highlight the text that contains the tooltip you'd like to remove
2. Select the Remove link icon from the text formatting toolbar () to remove the tooltip
Interacting with the tooltip
You can check how your tooltip works by switching to Preview or viewing it in your released course.
To reveal the tooltip, hover the mouse over the text where the tooltip is applied. To close it, select the x button at the top right corner of the tooltip.
Note: Tooltips are intended for short pieces of additional text and are only available to use in certain types of text boxes. We recommend keeping the information in the tooltip as brief as possible. Consider other options like an Accordion if the tooltip text is becoming too long. |
