Feature Focus: Personalize a learning experience by using Clips

The Clips and Reports features let you show your learner a 'clip' of their score, results, and much more within the module. They do this by allowing you to reference certain stored content from elsewhere in a course. These Clips help to make a course feel more tailored to the learner’s individual experience and progress. There are a number of Clips and Reports you can play back to the learner, as explained in this article.

Here we’ll show examples that demonstrate how several of these options have been used in practice.

Personalise by learner name

You can use the 'Learner name' option in Clips to pull their name in from the LMS and play it back within the course. This is great for personalising a welcome page or a final summary.

Alternatively, if you don’t have an LMS or login page you can still pull in the learner’s name by setting up a text input question at the start of the module that asks them to input their name, as shown in this delegation course. You can then use the 'Inputted text' Clip to play back the name they have entered.

Show learners how they scored

This compliance test example shows how you can play back the learner’s score as part of a pass or fail results page. The 'Total score (%)' Clip has been used to let learners know the percentage of questions they answered correctly within the test.

Play back the learner’s answer to a question

Encourage deeper reflection on a question by playing back how the learner answered. Here are a few examples of how this can be used to enhance the learning experience:

Create a comparison

In this performance improvement example the learner is asked to reflect on a thought-provoking question.

After choosing their answer, they are shown a social polling graph that visualises how the learner’s peers answered this question. Clips are used alongside this to play back the learner's answer to the question in comparison with the percentage of their peers who thought the same.

Showing the learner their answer again is a powerful way of promoting more reflection on the subject, especially when combined with demonstrating how their thinking compares to their peers. Playing back the percentage is also great for creating a feeling of community between learners – they’re not learning in isolation.

When playing back data related to question responses you will need to use a scored page report. In this example the How you answered report was used to play back the learner’s chosen answer, while the Same as you (percentage) report played back the percentage of learners who answered the same.

Create a personalised action plan

In this showcase example the learner answers a series of questions to discover their approach to time planning. After answering all the questions they are taken to a personalised action plan that uses the ‘inputted text’ Clip to play back the text they wrote in a text input question. This level of personalisation is a great way to help learners reflect on their existing approach to a situation, before you offer top tips or next steps.

Create a personalised summary

This example asks the learner to set themselves goals moving forward, and uses the 'inputted text' Clip to play these back as part of a personalised summary.

This is a great way to encourage the learner to commit to changing behaviours and take action moving forward.
