Setting up localized page versions in Variations

Layout, structural, and configuration settings for pages in a Multi-Language Project are controlled via the Parent. This allows your Variations to have a consistent structure, controlled in a single place. However, there may be times when you need to tailor the pages in your Variations for localization purposes.

In this case, you can configure which of the pages from the Parent are included in each Variation.

This is useful if you need to:

  • Create an alternative localized version of a page for a specific Variation.
If you have a page with guidance or information specific to a certain region or group of locations like different laws, regulations or cultural differences, you can hide the unneeded pages in the necessary Variation(s) and make an alternative version in the Parent that only appears for those locations instead.
  • Modify the layout of a page to better adapt to the language.
You may have a Variation where the text reads right-to-left but the page layout contains three Columns that contain sequential information intended to be read left-to-right. Here, you would create an alternative version of the page or pages in the Parent which would be more suited to a right-to-left layout and then choose which Variation(s) you’d like to include these pages in.

Creating a localized page

  1. In your Parent course, select the ellipsis menu (elu-ellipsis-icon) of the page you’d like to hide.
  2. Select Manage in Variations.

  3. Use the checkboxes to choose the Variation(s) you’d like to include this page in.
Checked: the page is included in the chosen Variation(s).
Unchecked: the page is omitted from the chosen Variation(s). This will mean the page is no longer accessible to learners who access those Variations.

  4. Create a copy of the original page in the Parent by opening the original page’s ellipsis menu (elu-ellipsis-icon) and selecting Duplicate. This will become the localized page.

  5. Use the Manage in Variations menu to set which Variations the localized page is included in.
  6. Double-click the new page tile or select Edit Page from the ellipsis menu to open it in the editing interface.
  7. Update the page with the changes you need.
