Using Auto-Translate to update a translated Project

If you've already launched a Multi-Language course and need to add or update content, you can quickly apply translations to the changes using Retranslate with Auto-Translate. This is especially helpful if your course has multiple language Variations, as it eliminates the need for manual updates or importing new translation files. Auto-Translate identifies and translates new content automatically while leaving existing translations untouched.

 

Re-translating your courses

1. Open the Parent course that has the Variations you'd like to re-translate

2. Go to Variations Manager:

3. Select Retranslate on one of the Variations you'd like to update:

4. Choose Auto translate

5. Select your preferred content option. For more information about these options, see the next section: Understanding the different translation scopes.

6. Select the language you're translating from and the language you're translating to from the drop down menus

7. Select Retranslate

The process may take a couple of minutes depending on the amount of content you're translating. Keep the page open until the process has finished. Closing or refreshing the page may interrupt the process, resulting in a partial translation.

 

Understanding the different translation scopes

There are two translation scopes available, each designed for different use cases. Additionally, you can refine the scope further based on specific needs.

1. Everything in course body

Use this option if you've made changes directly within the Variation.

  • What it does: Translates everything in the course body
  • What is included
    • New text added into a new text box via the Parent
    • Text that has been directly edited in the Variation
  • What is not included: Existing text boxes in a Variation that were edited via the Parent course

 

Example use case

You are managing a Multi-Language course. Due to an update in local laws, you needed to revise a specific passage in one of the Variations. You made this change by directly editing the passage in that Variation.

In addition, you need to add new information to all Variations. You create a new text box in the Parent course so that the new text will be automatically added to all your Variations.

In this scenario, you should select Everything in the course body. This ensures that both the reworded passage in the Variation and the new content added via the Parent are included in the translation for the Variation.

 

2. Changes to the Parent since your last import.

Use this option if you've only made changes in the Parent Project.

  • What it does: Identifies new content added in the Parent Project and translates the corresponding text in the Variation
  • What is included:
    • Newly added text content
    • Text that has been modified in existing text boxes.
  • What is not included: Text boxes that have been directly amended in the Variation

 

Example use case

You are managing a Multi-Language course. After the first translation, a team of reviewers made small changes directly in the Variations. 

Since launching your Multi-Language course, you have made significant changes to the Parent, such as adding new sections and modifying some of the original text. Now, you need these updates reflected in the Variations and want the new content to be automatically translated into the different languages, without affecting any manual edits made directly in the Variations.

In this scenario, you should select Changes to the Parent since your last import. This ensures all your changes in the Parent course are translated but the reviewers' changes are preserved.

 

Refining the scope

You can also choose to refine the scope further:

  • Include Page titles: Select this if you want page titles to be translated. We recommend selecting this unless you want your page titles to be the same across languages.
  • Include Interactive elements (such as Next & Previous buttons): Select this to include the Project's default text in your translation that you haven't manually added yourself. This can include things like button text for interactions, for example, the word Flip on a Flipcard. Unless you have a reason to exclude these elements, we recommend enabling this option to ensure full translation coverage.
