Give a rating: Rating scale

Rating scales are a great way for your learner to give answers that are intended to convey a feeling or a rating. This part offers a horizontal likert scale of answers that the learner can select from.

 

Adding a Rating scale

1. Open the page in your course where you would like to add the Rating scale question type.

2. In Layout, find the position on the page where you would like to add the Rating scale question type and select the Add here button.

6. A Rating scale element will be added to the page with four options added to the scale by default. Press the Save button to save the changes.

 

 

Rating scale Settings

In Layout, the settings for the Rating scale question type can be found by pressing the Variations menu on the top right of the part:

Under Variations you have the option to select the Form Type. This setting determines whether the question is considered as part of an Assessment or Survey, or used as a Knowledge Check:

Setting up a Rating scale

In Author, use the top text box to ask your question and add any additional information  if required:

By default, all of the answer options are set to incorrect. To select whether an answer option is correct (or change it back to incorrect), select the Edit menu to the right of the answer:

Under Answer is… select your preferred setting for the answer:

If your Rating Scale is a Survey, there is no need to set a correct answer as Surveys don’t report Correct or Incorrect scores.

To add more options to the scale, press the + button to the right of the element:

To add additional Rating scales to the part, press the + Add Question button to the left of the element:

Rating scale Example

The following provides a typical example of how a Rating scale is used in a course. The example consists of a number of Survey questions asking the learner to provide feedback on the course. In Preview, the questions display with the Rating scale selector placed at the first option by default:

The learner then works through the Survey questions, providing an answer for each one:

Once answered, the learner then submits their responses via the Submit button.
