Feature overview
Translate mode for Variations provides a focused editing view that shows the text in the current Variation alongside the corresponding original language text from the Parent.
When you switch to Translate mode, a pane opens next to your Project and the normal editing controls are disabled. This pane shows all of the text contained in each part of the page in editable text fields. Next to each text field, you will also see its original source text from the Variation‘s Parent.
You can also replace media like images and videos in the Variation, allowing you to add localized assets to your Variation and enhance the user experience.
This editing mode is useful for Variations that need to be manually translated or for when the translation needs to be reviewed and edited. Your changes show in the Project in real-time and you can highlight the part you’re editing in the pane or the part you’d like to edit in the Project so you can always be clear about which element you’re changing.
Access to Translate mode is controlled by a permission only possessed by the Translator User Role and Administrators.
Accounts with Advanced User Management can add this permission to existing roles if they would like other users to be able to access it. For more information about how to change a User Role, see Modifying a User Role's permissions.
Before you begin
Translate mode is available only in Variations. To use it, at least one Variation must have been created from a Parent course using one of these methods:
- Translate a course using Auto-Translate
- Translate a course using translation files
- Manually create a blank Variation
Switching to Translate
- Open the Variation you’d like to edit.
- Select Translate to switch the editing mode and open the Side-by-side editing pane.
You can enlarge the pane to span across the page by selecting the right-arrow button, giving you a more focused view.
Editing your content using the Side-by-side pane
The Side-by-side editing pane shows all the editable text and media on the current page alongside the original text from the Parent.
Editing text
Type your translation in the editable text fields in the Variation column, using the text in the Parent column as reference. You can use the same text formatting options that are available in the main editor.
Some text fields, like Title fields and Button text fields offer a smaller selection of formatting options.
Editing media
You can also change the images, video, and audio assets on a page.
- Select the drop-down menu below the asset you’d like to edit.
- Use the following controls to replace the media asset.
- Choose from library—choose a new asset from your organization’s Asset Library.
- Upload—upload a new asset from your computer.
