Useful Terminology

 

@mention

Used when commenting on a Project as part of a review to directly mention another colleague in your comment.

Accessibility Highlight

Also called a focus outline, this provides visual feedback for users who can't use a mouse, or have visual impairment, when using Tab on their keyboard for navigation.

Administrator Role

Administrator is one of the Default User Roles you can assign in Elucidat. An Administrator has complete access to your projects, releases, themes and templates and account settings.

Advanced User Management

Allows you to combine different permissions to create custom User Roles.

Analyze (interface tab)

The Analyze interface tab is where you can see learner data for each project, including general data like completion rates and question responses, as well as detailed learner specific information. 

Analytics

Refers to the Analyse interface tab. 

Analytics Role

Analytics is one of the Default User Roles you can assign in Elucidat. A person with the Analytics role is allowed to view the Analytics information from your courses and they are able to Comment and use the Review feature, they are not allowed to make edits to content.

API

An API (Application Programming Interface) enables data transmission between one software product and another. The Elucidat API allows management of projects and releases, as well as some account and author management.

Assessments

Questions which do not give the learner immediate feedback.

Asset

Assets are the items kept in your Asset Library. They can be images, video, audio and font files.

Asset Library

The Asset Library is a folder (sometimes with additional folders at sublevels if you have created them) containing the assets for your account.

Author (interface tab)

The Author interface tab is where you add the content for your elearning project, and can configure a few local display options such as icons.

Author Role 

Author is one of the Default User Roles you can assign in Elucidat. An Author has access to the Author and Preview areas of a project, as well as Releases and Styles. 

Author + Analytics Role

Author + Analytics is one of the Default User Roles you can assign in Elucidat. The same as an Author, but also able to view the Analytics information from your courses

Authoring

Authoring is how we refer to the creation of elearning using Elucidat. 

Backup SCORM

A full SCORM package which can be uploaded to your LMS. This release type does not require internet access, but cannot use all Elucidat features, such as rereleasing and social polling. 

Bookmarking

Bookmarking allows for data to be stored to return learners to the place they left a course, and retain their previous work. Bookmarking behaviour differs between different Release types. 

Branching

Branching refers to a course structure allowing for learners to follow different paths through a course, allowing for a more personalized experience. This can be achieved using Links and/or Rules.  

Clips

Clips can be used to play back personalized information to a Learner such as their name, result, or score. 

Commenting

Comments can be left in Elucidat projects for your team to review and resolve, allowing for greater collaboration. 

Complete

Refers to the point at which a learner fulfils the requirements of a course, and a completion status is sent to your LMS and/or the Elucidat analytics.

Cookies

Cookies are small blocks of data created while a learner accesses a course. Elucidat uses cookies to support bookmarking. 

CSV

A CSV - comma-separated values - is a file type used to export learner data and translation files in Elucidat. See also - XLIFF.  

Departments

Departments allow you to organise the project Folders in your accounts, and restrict access for your users to specific Departments. 

Developer Role

Developer is one of the Default User Roles you can assign in Elucidat. A Developer has the same permissions as Author with the addition of API Access.

External Collaborator

An external collaborator is a user who does not have an Elucidat account but has been granted temporary access to the Elucidat platform to review one or more Projects.

Folder

Folders allow you to organise your Projects. Multiple Folders can be assigned to a Department.  

Gifting

Gifting a course means to send a copy to another Elucidat user. Gifts are duplicates of your projects, which means you can hand them over to colleagues or clients whilst keeping your original.

Guided Author Role

A simplified Author role designed for novice authors; Guided Authors can only create Projects, edit page content in Author, upload assets and start a Project from a Template

Hamburger Menu

Also known as the Collapsed Menu Icon. Button typically placed in the top corner of an interface and used to open a side menu or navigation menu. mceclip0.png

Hotspots

A button or clickable area which serves as a link or a popup launcher. 

Icon

A small graphic symbol on screen that represents an action or a resource.

Individual Feedback 

A question type which displays different feedback for each of the different answer options. 

Interactions

Elements that can be added to pages of your Elucidat project which the learner can interact with to explore the content, rather than simply reading text or viewing images. 

Knowledge Checks

Questions which give the learner immediate feedback in popup windows. 

Layout (interface tab)

The Layout interface tab is where you structure the page of your elearning project, and can configure the elements on the page. 

Layout Designer Role

Layout Designer is one of the Default User Roles you can assign in Elucidat. A Layout Designer is an Author that is also allowed to change the layout of your theme using the Layout interface tab.

Layout Designer + Analytics Role

Layout Designer + Analytics is one of the Default User Roles you can assign in Elucidat. The same as a Layout Designer, but also able to view the Analytics information from your courses

LRS

Learning Record Store. 

Parent Course

A Parent Course is a type of Project from which you can create different language versions of your content called Variations. A Parent Course acts as the central control for your Variations. 

Multiple Choice

A question type which has more than one correct answer. The learner must select all the correct options to receive a full score. See also - Single Choice.

Online Link Release

A release option which allows you to create a weblink to access the course rather than learners accessing it via an LMS. 

Pages

The different screens or slides making up your Elucidat Project. 

Pages (interface tab)

An overview of all the Pages in your Project. 

Page Locking

Prevent a learner from moving forward in the course until they have completed the page completion requirements. 

Permission

User Roles in Elucidat are a combination of Permissions, each of which gives the user access to different Elucidat features. 

Popup, Feedback popup

A smaller window which appears in front of the current screen, either to give the learner more information, or to provide feedback. 

Preview (interface tab)

The Preview interface tab is where you can view the Project as a learner will see it. While in the Preview tab configurations such as page locking and Rules will apply, as they would in your live Release. 

Project

Each individual elearning course you build in Elucidat is called a Project. 

Project Locking

This will disable editing in both Author and Layout and will prevent configuration settings from being changed. 

Question Pool

A group of question pages can be added to a Question Pool. The learner will then be presented with a random selection of these pages. 

Re-Release

Allows you to update existing releases so your course will be automatically updated to reflect your changes. You do not have to re-upload your zip file to your LMS (when using the SCORM for LMS release type) or change existing release links. 

Release

Creating a Release of your Project is the final step which will allow you to publish your final course to your LMS or simply share with your colleagues.

Release Notes

A regular update of ongoing development and bug fixes. 

Review (interface tab)

 

The Review tab is where you can make comments in a Project for others to review. 

Reviewer Role

Reviewer is one of the Default User Roles you can assign in Elucidat. A Reviewer is able to view projects in Preview and Review mode, add comments, and mark comments as resolved.

Restricted Layout Designer Role

Restricted Layout Designer is one of the Default User Roles you can assign in Elucidat. A user with this role has access to the features of the 'Layout designer' but are not allowed to make edits to Styles or make account-wide changes to Page Types.

Rules

Rules can be added to pages to hide them from learners unless they fulfil certain requirements. 

Score Summary

The Score Summary element can be used to display the results of an assessment back to a user on a results page once the assessment has been completed. 

SCORM

SCORM, which stands for Sharable Content Object Reference Model, is a set of technical standards for elearning software products

Single Choice

A question type which can have only one correct answer. See also - Multiple Choice.

Start from scratch

Creating your own custom page in Layout from a blank page rather than using a template.

Styles

Styles can be used to quickly and easily apply formatting to multiple projects. 

Surveys

Questions which do not have a right or wrong answer. These can be used to gather input from your learners, and will show a general feedback popup, although this can be removed. 

Template

A type of Elucidat Project that can be used as a blueprint to create other Projects.

Translations

The content of an Elucidat Project can be exported as a CSV or XLIFF to be translated. This file can then be used to create translated versions of your Project in Elucidat. 

User Roles

A Role is a defined set of permissions governing what can be accessed within your Elucidat account. These can be allocated to each of your Users.

Variation

A Variation is a Project that has been created from a Parent Course. You can create as many Variations as you like from a single Parent Course which means that you can offer your content in a wide variety of languages. 

Video

Videos can be uploaded directly, or embedded from Youtube and Brightcove. 

Your Data

The tab within the Analyse section which displays detailed learner specific information. This data can also be exported from this area in a CSV format. 

XLIFF

A XLIFF - XML Localization Interchange File Format - is a file type used to export translation files in Elucidat. See also - CSV.  

ZIP file

A ZIP is an archive file format that supports lossless data compression. A ZIP file may contain one or more files or directories that may have been compressed. Elucidat uses ZIP files for SCORM releases and learner analytics data.
